WASHINGTON — Democratic leaders in Congress on Wednesday angrily walked out of a White House meeting with President Donald Trump after he had a “meltdown,” according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown. Sad to say,” Pelosi told reporters outside the White House with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The article goes on to state the following:
The meeting was about the president’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, paving the way for Turkey to invade the area. Ahead of the meeting, the House overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution rebuking the Trump’s decision to pull troops out.
Republicans spoke out after the meeting, explaining that Pelosi seemed to create conflict at the meeting.
Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy (Cali.) said:
“I see a pattern of behavior with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She storms out of another meeting. Trying to make it unproductive. Other Democrats stayed and we had a very productive meeting.”
“Unfortunately, the Speaker tries to make everything political. Her own statements weren’t productive,” McCarthy continued. “To storm out of the meeting, which I’ve watched times before during a crisis, is really not the ability of a Speaker or the style of how a speaker should carry herself out.”
He went on to criticize Pelosi’s focus, saying important issues are not being addressed while the Speaker of the House keeps her focus on impeaching President Trump.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) called it “very disappointing” that the Democratic leadership would walk out of a very important meeting.
