VIDEO: Gunfire erupts in Caracas as Venezuela’s Guaido tries to topple Maduro

Video footage has emerged showing President Nicolas Maduro’s troops running over anti-government protesters during clashes with the Venezuelan National Guard.

Armoured vehicles operated by soldiers loyal to the besieged president were seen ploughing into demonstrators in front of La Carlota base in Caracas.

Heavy gunfire crackled through the Venezuelan capital on Tuesday after opposition leader Juan Guaido called for a military uprising to oust President Maduro.

Guaido urged protesters and members of the military to join what he called the ‘final phase of Operation Liberty’ in a video taken at La Carlota airbase in the capital Caracas while surrounded by heavily-armed soldiers.

The troops then set up defensive positions around the base before Maduro’s forces arrived and opened fire with teargas followed by live rounds, according to witnesses.

The United States is standing behind Guaido. Vice President Mike Pence tweeted the following statement:

.@vladimirpadrino: The FANB must protect the Constitution and the Venezuelan people. It should stand by the National Assembly and the legitimate institutions against the usurpation of democracy. The United States stands with the people of Venezuela.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released the following statement:

Today interim President Juan Guaido announced start of Operación Libertad. The U.S. Government fully supports the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy. Democracy cannot be defeated. #EstamosUnidosVE

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) slammed CNN for calling the uprising a “coup attempt,” tweeting:

Just saw @CNN shamefully call what is happening today in #Venezuela a “coup attempt” @jguaido is recognized as legitimate interim President of #Venezuela by constitution,over 50 countries & OAS. The only coup is the one carried out by #Cuba in support of dictator #Maduro
