TRUMP TWEETS: Defends move to pull out of Syria amid growing backlash

President Trump doubled down on his decision to pull U.S. troops from northern Syria in several statements on Twitter Wednesday morning, even as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Twitter that his country would be invading northeastern Syria.

Trump has faced severe backlash from both Democrats and Republicans alike over his decision. Sen. Lindsey Graham blasted Trump over the move, saying he is making the biggest mistake of his presidency, putting the nation at risk, and putting his presidency at risk.

“This is worse than when Obama left Iraq,” Graham said, warning that it could lead to a re-emergence of ISIS.

Wednesday morning, President Trump tweeted:

Fighting between various groups that has been going on for hundreds of years. USA should never have been in Middle East. Moved our 50 soldiers out. Turkey MUST take over captured ISIS fighters that Europe refused to have returned. The stupid endless wars, for us, are ending!

In another pair of tweets, the president added:

The United States has spent EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS fighting and policing in the Middle East. Thousands of our Great Soldiers have died or been badly wounded. Millions of people have died on the other side. GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE…..

….IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY! We went to war under a false & now disproven premise, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. There were NONE! Now we are slowly & carefully bringing our great soldiers & military home. Our focus is on the BIG PICTURE! THE USA IS GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!

President Trump then responded to a tweet by Sergio Gor, who wrote, “It’s expected that some in the GOP who took us into these endless quagmires in the Middle East are unhappy about ending wars, but where is the left? The silence is resounding. Silence is not always golden. @realDonaldTrump is doing the right thing & should have bipartisan support.”

Trump replied, “True. Should have never been there in the first place!”
