A judge has ordered Google to turn over a year’s worth of Jussie Smollett’s emails, private messages, photographs and location data to a special prosecutor who is looking into why prosecutors abruptly dismissed criminal charges against the actor.
Take a look at some of the most bizarre hoaxes to have surfaced in 2019, capturing the attention of millions and further sowing division among Americans.
It has been a DECADE, y’all.
We’re not talking OJ Simpson or Princess Diana here, but the 2010s had some pretty wild, gut-wrenching, salacious, and jaw-dropping scandals of its own. Cheating, breakups, breakdowns, major courtroom battles, and, unfortunately, a whole lot of dirty old men. What a decade for debauchery…
There were so many to choose from, in fact, that we had a TON of trouble narrowing it down to the ten best (ten worst?). So… there’s a lengthy honorable mention list at the bottom of this post, too.
But without further ado, get into what you want and re-live the world’s craziness! Here are the ten BIGGEST celeb scandals of the 2010s (below):
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
It’s the wedding heard ’round the world… Kim Kardashian West and Kris Humphries tied the knot in an over-the-top ceremony in 2011, but just 72 days later, the KUWTK star filed for divorce. At the time, the entire thing was seen as a publicity stunt for the Kardashian family’s still relatively new reality TV show. Things must have been really bad behind the scenes, though, because Kim barely made it past two months before being forced to officially split from the NBA star.
For his part, Humphries long threatened litigation over the entire incident, alleging he’d been used as fodder for the fam’s reality TV show, too. Nothing much ever came of it, though, and the pair’s divorce was finalized in April 2013. We look back on this wedding now with amusement, but at the time, this was a really significant scandal. Backlash was so severe that it seemed for a while as though it might derail the Kardashian fam’s rise to reality TV mega fame right then and there. It didn’t, of course, and the fam has only gotten bigger, but the Kris Humphries wedding marked one major mistake for a fam that very, very rarely steps out of line in the public eye. LOLz!
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
It was one of the most high-profile cheating scandals ever… in 2012, while dating her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, superstar actress Kristen Stewart got caught making out with Rupert Sanders, her Snow White and the Huntsman director. Sanders was married at the time, and had his own fall-out to deal with back at home. Stewart bore the brunt of the public’s reaction to the cheating scandal, and later publicly apologized for her major mistake. The apology was genuine and the remorse worked — for a while, at least — though she and Pattinson eventually called it quits for good a year later, in 2013.
As far as breakups and cheating scandals go, this is the biggest one of the decade in some ways. The media scrutiny on these two was already beyond intense after Twilight‘s release — and then, to have a successful real-life couple come out of the movie, only to have it all end like this. Just… wow. Even Donald Trump was obsessed with this couple for a while!
Amanda Bynes‘ career was on an upward trajectory in the late 2000s, fresh off her long-standing stints on All That and What I Like About You and several movies, like She’s The Man. But behind the scenes, by the time the 2010s hit, it was all bad for the former Nickelodeon star, who was in the beginning stages of a brutal Adderall addiction combined with major mental health issues that had apparently long been simmering. After dropping out of two movies — Post Grad and Hall Pass — Bynes took a hiatus from acting, and the trouble began.
In 2012, she was arrested on DUI charges in West Hollywood, and in 2013, she was charged with reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana during a run-in with the cops in New York City. Later that same year, she set a small fire in front of a random home in Thousand Oaks, California, and was put on a 72-hour involuntary psych hold; she almost lit her dog on fire in the process, as well. Erratic behavior and extremely bizarre tweets followed throughout these years, helping to develop her reputation as remarkably unstable. Eventually, her parents were granted a conservatorship over her affairs, and slowly but surely, things started to get better. In 2018, she revealed she’d been sober for four years thanks to her parents, and in 2019, though she had a scare at the end of the year, she was apparently looking for her own place to live once again.
A one-off comment on stage in October 2014 by comedian Hannibal Buress led to the downfall of one of the most iconic comedians and sitcom stars of all time. Mad that Cosby would criticize young black comics, Buress called out long-standing but largely unknown rape and sexual assault allegations against the former Cosby Show star. Buress had been commenting on the allegations as part of his act for months, but for whatever reason, a video of the comic’s comments on that fateful day went viral, and a media firestorm ensued. By the end of 2014, more than 60 women had come forward with credible sexual assault accusations against Cosby — some decades old — and the thoroughly disgraced icon had gone from legend to pariah in a matter of months.
One woman, Andrea Constand, was still within the statute of limitations on her accusations, and Cosby was forced to go to trial, facing three counts of aggravated indecent assault against the former Temple University employee. In 2018, Cosby was found guilty and sentenced to three to ten years in state prison. It was a remarkably light punishment relative to how many women came forward with horrific stories about their time with Cosby. Even to this day, it’s almost unimaginable how a family-friendly TV icon could have fallen so far — and yet, here we are.
Solange Knowles vs. JAY-Z
In May of 2014, leaked surveillance camera footage showed JAY-Z being physically attacked by Beyoncé‘s little sis Solange Knowles in an elevator after a Met Gala party. Queen Bey stood passively off to the side as Solange punched, kicked, and slapped the rapper, and a bodyguard did his best to break things up.
Immediately, fan theories swirled about what the cause of the commotion could possibly be. The fallout lasted weeks, with cheating rumors flying around and plenty of other reactions from every corner of the celeb universe. The trio eventually released a statement about the incident, and Beyoncé even mentioned it on her Flawless remix, further solidifying the legendary moment. It unquestionably was instrumental in raising Solange’s public profile, and even years later the girls’ father still gets a kick out of the video. No pun intended…
Though the infamous October 2016 Access Hollywood tape leak alongside sycophantic TV personality Billy Bush may be one of the most famous moments here, pretty much everything The Donald did this decade was scandalous. From years of his s**tty and inappropriate birther accusations against Barack Obama, to Trump’s own improbable candidacy and eventual underdog victory to reach the White House, the 2010s were (unfortunately) good to The Donald… and bad for the rest of us. Even Billy Bush made a regrettable (and forgettable) TV comeback after he’d decided he’d waited on the sideline long enough.
Fast forward to 2019 and Trump is still going strong, despite being the third president ever to be impeached by the House of Representatives for self-dealing conduct during a meeting with leaders from Ukraine. Forget consequences, though; The Donald has proven himself to be largely free of those, as he uses the new year to kickstart his 2020 re-election campaign. When will it end?!
Activist Tarana Burke first coined the term ‘Me Too’ way back in 2006 when referring to widespread sexual assault and sexual misconduct, but usage of the phrase — and its hashtag — took off into the stratosphere in 2017 and 2018. Those two years were a particularly powerful time for women in the entertainment industry and around the globe, as men in power were called to account for their allegedly inappropriate ways. Accusations against high-profile people ranged from rape and sexual assault claims, to inappropriate touching and sexual misconduct.
Dozens of men like Harvey Weinstein, Bill O’Reilly, Matt Lauer, Louis CK, and even Kevin Spacey saw careers pause or come to an outright end as part of the fall-out from the movement. Thankfully, hundreds of women finally had their voices heard — and deservingly so, after years of repeated sexual abuse and misconduct in some of the worst cases. The #MeToo movement — and its sister initiative, Time’s Up — can’t un-do all the bad things that have happened to women in the entertainment industry and elsewhere, but at least it brought to the forefront a frank and honest discussion about power dynamics and inappropriate behavior.
In a way somewhat similar to Bill Cosby’s situation, R. Kelly had long been dogged by decades of sexual assault and misconduct allegations. New evidence came to light in 2019, though, and the R&B singer was finally indicted on a variety of sex crime charges, eventually facing both federal and state prosecution for his alleged actions against multiple women. A month later, the singer gave an intense interview to CBS host Gayle King, insisting on his innocence and further charging an already emotional situation.
The peak of the scandal hit when the documentary series Surviving R. Kelly debuted on television later in 2019, reportedly enraging the singer and his team. A second part of the doc series is now set to be released in early 2020, too. Kelly has spent most of the year in jail while he awaits his trial dates in 2020; women who are accused of being his sex slaves have since come out to support him publicly, further muddying up what’s already been a remarkably shady case. Whenever it ends, Kelly may yet go down in history as one of the most prolific predators to ever work in the entertainment industry. Horrifying…
Empire star Jussie Smollett made the wrong kind of headlines early in 2019 when he reported what at the time appeared to be a violent, racist attack against him on the streets of Chicago by men wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats. Very quickly, police sussed out inconsistencies in the actor’s story, and it was later alleged the entire thing was a staged, fake attack. Political commentators and public figures from around the world weighed in on it, and for weeks, Smollett’s bizarre actions were the talk of the nation.
The actor was sued by the city of Chicago at one point, in a bid for the government to receive pay back for the hours they seemingly wasted on his case; he counter-sued them later in the year. Smollett also faced his own criminal battle in regards to the alleged hoax, but state prosecutors eventually dropped the charges against him, cutting him at least a bit of a break. He was on the outs with Empire producers pretty much immediately afterwards, too, but by the end of 2019 there was an outside shot they’d have him back for the show’s sixth season. What a wild time…
College admissions scam
In early 2019, federal prosecutors announced the results of a massive investigation leading to dozens of indictments in a wide-reaching high-profile scam allegedly being perpetrated by rich people to gain admission for their children into some of America’s most prestigious universities. Among the indictments were celebs Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman Macy, who were both accused of bribery and fraud in attempts to allegedly gain college admission for their respective daughters. Immediately the scandal rocked social media, and its fallout stayed in the headlines for months. Loughlin’s Full House character, Aunt Becky, quickly became a meme, and both women deleted all their social media profiles amid the incredible backlash.
Before the year’s end, Huffman Macy had agreed to a plea deal over the act of bribing an SAT administrator with $15,000 to help improve her daughter’s test scores. The Desperate Housewives actress ended up serving less than two weeks in a minimum security federal prison in northern California as a result; disgraceful though it may be, at least the drama was over for her before the end of the year.
Loughlin, on the other hand, chose to fight the feds in court alongside her husband, Mossimo Giannulli. The couple will have their day in court at some point in 2020, and the stakes are high! Forget about the deal Huffman Macy cut, because the accusation against the Fuller House star involves a significantly bigger bribe ($500,000!) and major deceit (fake rowing team bios!) with a major institution (the University of Southern California). Throw in daughter Olivia Jade‘s fledgling vlog career on YouTube, and you’ve got MAJOR family drama. Oh, what rich people will do with their money…
It was damn near impossible for us to decide on ten celeb scandals to rule them all, y’all.
Seriously — we debated back and forth for days, and ultimately left out a lot of salacious and controversial moments, like Paula Deen getting caught using the n-word, and the discovery of Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s love child. There was the whole celeb nude photo hacking scandal, of course, as well as particularly bad behavior from men like Josh Duggar, Hank Baskett, Jake and Logan Paul, etc.
We nearly included more breakups, like the splits of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, or Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Considering the jail time involved, you might even be able to make a case for the ongoing saga surrounding Joe Giudice and estranged reality TV wife Teresa Giudice, too! And that crazy sex cult Allison Mack was involved with was widely considered, of course. Who doesn’t love reading about a sex cult?!
The Kardashians figured big in these scandals, as to be expected. We nearly included Kanye West‘s infamous comments on slavery, and gave a lot of thought to possibly adding in the love triangle drama that went down between Khloé Kardashian, Tristan Thompson, and Jordyn Woods. Kendall Jenner‘s poor choice of commercials was considered here, as was Caitlyn Jenner‘s brutal tell-all book fall-out. Kimye’s battle against Taylor Swift, full of leaked phone calls and snake emojis, was another one heavily considered. And Taylor’s own saga with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta may play out more in the next decade to come.
Lamar Odom‘s near-death experience was one more particularly significant story from the 2010s, as was Roseanne Barr‘s epic racist collapse. Kathy Griffin‘s staged beheading of Trump turned out bigger than we’d ever expected, too. Downfalls both serious (Whitney Houston‘s sudden death) and frivolous (Ariana Grande‘s donut-licking incident) also made the master list.
And s**t, who could forget #OscarsSoWhite?! And Kevin Hart‘s hosting hubbub?? Oh, and what about the colossal f**k-up in 2017 when La La Land was incorrectly named best picture, even though Moonlight had actually won the award?! That happened not even three years ago, and yet it feels like a lifetime… CRAZY!!!
Do you see what we mean now? So many options to choose from — and so tough to keep it at ten!
But there you have it! What do U think about all these scandals, Perezcious readers?! Did we choose right in picking the most salacious ones? What’d we miss?

Is Camila Cabello telling the truth about her past comments? Do you forgive her? Prince William and Kate Middleton remind us of his cheating scandal! Should Jussie Smollett return to Empire for the final season? Lori Loughlin‘s coming out with more lies!

It might not be curtains for Jussie Smollet on Empire after all!
According to reports, bosses for the Fox musical drama are considering bringing the disgraced actor back during the show’s sixth and final season months after his character was written off due to the attack he was accused of staging for publicity.
As fans know, the 37-year-old was axed from Empire in season five after Chicago police claimed Smollett had faked getting attacked by two men who had allegedly hurled racist and homophobic slurs at him on the streets of the Windy City. Smollett was accused of fabricating the incident and charged with making a false police report; although those charges were eventually dropped, Fox suits decided it was best to sever the show from the real-life drama.
But now, discussions are apparently underway to possibly have the star return!
In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Brett Mahoney admitted that it would be “weird” to end the show without Smollett, who played one of the main characters, explaining:
“It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him.”
While Mahoney confirmed Smollett’s potential return was being “discussed,” he made it clear that nothing was official just yet, adding:
“It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.”
Wow! That’s a huge leap from creator Lee Daniels’ stance back in June, when he declared the star would never return to the series.
In response to a report at the time that Jussie was going to be brought back in the second half of season six, Daniels tweeted:
“Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire.”
Hmmm… we wonder if Mr. Daniels knows about these recent “discussions”?
Jussie’s final Empire appearance — or so we thought — came in season five, with his character Jamal Lyon marrying boyfriend Kai.
Off-screen, the actor reportedly filed a counter-suit against the city of Chicago, claiming he was the victim of “malicious prosecution” which caused him “substantial economic damages as well as reputational harm, humiliation, mental anguish and extreme emotional distress” while his case was pending.
Do U think the show should bring Jussie back for a curtain call? Share your thoughts in the comments (below)!

Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney has hinted at a possible return for disgraced actor Jussie Smollett in the Fox drama’s finale, arguing it would be “weird to end the show without him.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) blamed “white supremacy” Thursday for a mass killing in New Jersey carried out by two black assailants, one of whom had ties to a nationalist hate group.
Tlaib linked to a tweet from IfNotNow naming three of the victims of Wednesday’s rampage in Jersey City, two of whom were Orthodox Jews. She wrote, “This is heartbreaking. White supremacy kills.”
Recent Stories in Issues
Tlaib, who represents a majority African-American district in Detroit, deleted her tweet after respondents pointed out the race of the suspects. She didn’t send any follow-up tweet acknowledging her error, condemning the perpetrators, or expressing condolences for the victims.
The shooters were identified as David Anderson and Francine Graham. Anderson had ties to the Black Hebrew Israelites, a black separatist movement that was labeled a hate group by the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center. Known for its members who engage in provocative street preaching, the group harbors black supremacists and has no association with Judaism.
Anderson and Graham barged into a kosher grocery store and killed three people inside, and they killed a police officer in the ensuing firefight. Anderson and Graham were eventually shot and killed by authorities.
The New York Times reported Anderson had posted anti-Semitic and anti-police screeds on the Internet, and the massacre is being investigated as a hate crime.
The Black Hebrew Israelites came to public attention in January when they directed abusive remarks at some students from Covington Catholic High School in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Tlaib has promoted several racial hoaxes in 2019, including accusing the Covington Catholic students of harassing a Native American man after deceptive video of their interaction was shared online. She also bought into actor Jussie Smollett’s claim he was attacked by two white Donald Trump supporters, saying “dangerous lies spewing from the right wing is [sic] killing & hurting our people.”
Chicago police later arrested Smollett for orchestrating a fake attack on himself as part of a scheme to raise his salary on the TV show Empire. Prosecutors later dropped the charges against Smollett in a controversial move that infuriated Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.
"When one of the most famous black and gay men in America is not safe, the message is clearer than it has ever been." The dangerous lies spewing from the right wing is killing & hurting our people.

Pile on the turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, and DRAMA!
We’ve had a lot of celeb scandals in the last 365 days — so take a break from family time (you probably need it, LOLz) and scroll through our perfectly curated list of OMG moments from the last year! Don’t worry, they’re abridged versions. These sagas are complicated AF!
We have a feeling you’ll be thankful for many things after reading what these stars have been through!
Jordyn Woods / Tristan Thompson / Khloé Kardashian
This was honestly a gift for many reasons, and we know Khloé Kardashian is thankful! She was finally able to break free from Tristan Thompson‘s d**k spell after it was revealed he and Kylie Jenner‘s BFF Jordyn Woods spent the night partying together and shared a kiss.
Following the February revelation, there was a ton of back and fourth between the three celebs. Kylie lost a BFF, and Jordyn even appeared on Red Table Talk to share her side of the drama. Since then, Khloé has thrown her sole focus on daughter True Thompson, and Tristan has attempted to win his baby momma back time and time again.
Ultimately she has moved on, but the scars are definitely still there for all involved!
Operation Varsity Blues
This one is a doozie! A slew of rich parents were caught in a massive FBI investigation called Operation Varsity Blues, where they stand accused of doing things like doctor SAT results, falsify athletic records, and more to get their kids an easy pass into various universities and colleges. Many parents apparently paid $200,000 and up to $6.5 million in alleged bribes.
Two of those parents just happened to be famous — Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. For what it’s worth, Huffman took the high road and declared she was guilty of paying $15K to allow her daughter more time for testing AND having a proctor alter her answers for a higher score. She served a 14 day sentence, agreed to pay a $30,000 fine, be under one-year of probation, and perform 250 hours of community service.
Lori and her husband Mossimo Giuliani, however, are still maintaining their innocence and have plead not guilty to the charges of conspiring to commit mail fraud, money laundering, and conspiring to commit federal programs bribery. They are accused of paying $500K for false athletic documents so their daughters Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose could attend USC as crew recruits — despite never playing the sport. 2020 is going to be an exciting (and terrifying) time for the former Fuller House star and her fashion designer beau. They face A TON of potential prison time for the alleged crimes.
Royal Family Tea
While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had an exciting year, becoming first time parents to Master Archie, the drama surrounding them, royal customs, familial rifts, and prying press have been anything but ideal for the young couple.
The family, specifically Prince William and Harry, have also spoke openly about not seeing eye to eye on certain things. We mean, Will is in line for the throne, so we have a feeling he’s very by the book, as Harry has always been a wild child! Couple that with the feud reports between Meghan and Kate Middleton — and we’ve got ourselves lots of juicy rumors!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also been steadfast on breaking away from Queen Elizabeth‘s hold, dashing many traditions. Additionally, the duo have been duking it out with British press over a letter Meghan sent to her father before her wedding, as well as false reports about excessive spending.
The court cases are just heating up, so he have a lot yet to be exposed! At least Meghan and Harry will be spending the holidays in Los Angeles, away from all the U.K. chaos!
Wendy Williams’ Messy Divorce
Wendy Williams is usually dishing out the tea, but in 2019 she was front and center for a scandal involving her very own family! The talk show host’s now ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, fathered a love child with his young masseuse — and s**t hit the fan.
Kev, who executive produced his wife’s show, was swiftly given the boot, and Wendy moved into a sober halfway house to battle ongoing demons associated with addiction. Since the chaos unfolded, Wendy seems to be doing good — she’s dating younger men, and enjoying life.
Hopefully things will go a lot smoother for her next year!
Jussie Smollett Scandal
In January, Empire actor Jussie Smollett claimed he was attacked by two masked men in Chicago, where bleach was allegedly tossed on him and a noose was tied around his neck. He also alleged they yelled “MAGA Country” before fleeing the scene. At first, the public rallied around the openly gay actor and supported him after suffering from the alleged hate crime. Fast forward a few days, and Jussie’s story started getting looser and looser with new evidence coming to light. Two brothers, Ola and Abel Osundairo, were labeled as “persons of interest” before claiming the star paid them to help him stage the attack.
Jussie was ultimately arrested, charged with filing a false police report. In court, he pled not guilty for lying about the alleged attack. Police claim the star staged the incident in an effort to generate publicity because he was dissatisfied with his Empire salary.
Chicago P.D. was shocked after the 16 felony charges against the 37-year-old were dropped in March — a decision that prompted the City of Chicago to file a civil lawsuit against the actor to recoup $130,000 in overtime costs stemming from the high-profile investigation. Oh and thanks to the scandal, Smollett was cut from Empire entirely.
Currently, Jussie is suing Chicago for malicious prosecution!! And he’s still claiming complete innocence. Can’t wait to see how this one pans out!
Miley Cyrus / Liam Hemsworth
Ok, this was such a rollercoaster to watch unfold. Hold on tight as we dive in to the end of Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus‘ decade-long relationship.
As most of you know, Miam met on the set of their movie The Last Song in 2009. They fell deeply in love, got engaged, and ended up breaking things off in 2013. Then, Miley went through her Bangerz era, and Liam did his solo thing for a while. The pair eventually reunited in 2016, making all of their shippers’ wildest dreams come true! They got married in an intimate 2018 ceremony and we all thought things were picture perfect… until this summer!
Miley’s rep abruptly announces their separation in August, and then she’s spotted with Brody Jenner‘s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter getting handsy on a yacht in Italy. The internet literally goes WILD, as the pair post all over Instagram. Liam retreats to Australia to get away from the press madness.
More info comes out about their breakup — like Miley was the one who initiated it because she was tired of Liam’s hard partying ways. Oh, and she released the song Slide Away, which directly references their crash and burn. After this, Hemsworth files for divorce citing the ever popular “irreconcilable differences”. Miley then goes on a Twitter tirade, slamming reports she cheated on Liam.
Among all of this, Kait and Miles hot and heavy fling fizzles out, and the singer was soon spotted with Aussie hunk Cody Simpson. Liam was also seen seemingly moving on with Australian actress Maddison Brown. Although there were some Miley and Cody split reports, both couples appear to be thriving!
See, we told you it was a rollercoaster! All that and MORE happened in a three month span! LOLz!

Talking the Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein mess today and the bold move by Queen Elizabeth‘s son to put his royal duties on pause. If you are British, we NEED YOU! Let’s work through this together! Plus, Tana Mongeau is so fake! Shocking, right? Aaron Carter explodes in courtroom! Brad Pitt is denying having a new girlfriend, but we’re not buying that!
And so much MORE!
It sounds like Jussie Smollett was serious about making Chicago law enforcement officials pay up for how they handled the investigation into his alleged hate crime hoax earlier this year.
We’ve learned the former Empire star has reportedly filed a countersuit against the city of Chicago, claiming he was the victim of “malicious prosecution” which caused him “substantial economic damages as well as reputational harm, humiliation, mental anguish and extreme emotional distress” while his case was pending.
Well, no one can dispute the “reputational harm” that’s for sure…
As our readers will recall, the 37-year-old was accused of fabricating a claim he was beaten by racist homophobes outside of a Subway restaurant in the town’s Streeterville area back in January.
In the time since then, Smollet was cleared of any criminal prosecution for the crime of filing a false report by Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx. However, the city later slapped him with a fat bill for $130,106.15 to recoup the money he cost them across the board for looking into the matter. They did not share Foxx’s opinion Jussie could be let off the hook so easily.
According to docs obtained by TMZ, Jussie’s aforementioned lawsuit is a mere response to their financial request.
It appears two can play this game…
Additionally, the legal action not only targets the city but several other parties involved, too: the entire Chicago Police Department, Detectives Michael Theis and Edward Wodnicki, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, and also brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, who were alleged to have helped stage the incident — and turned on Smollett after being interrogated by the cops.
In the suit, Smollett’s attorney notes the Osundairo brothers were held by the cops for 47 hours and at first adamantly denied any involvement in the assault. His team says it was only after the pair were assured they’d get immunity that they began to change their tune about what really went down that night.
The openly gay actor initially said he was jumped by two white men who shouted racist and homophobic slurs, as well as, “This is MAGA country!” at him during the brawl. He also claimed his assailants doused him with bleach and threw a noose around his neck.
Jussie insists he doesn’t know what involvement if any, the brothers had in the attack and speculates they were lured into a deliberate smear campaign against him by police.
(It’s worth noting Abel and Ola have also sued Smollett’s legal team for supposedly making defamatory comments about them in their defense of the embattled star, too.)
So, this is just another litigation added to the list. We have a feeling there’s probably more where these came from, too.
Thoughts, Perezcious readers? Do YOU think Jussie still has a chance left in this case?

State Rep. Erica Thomas (D.) accused Eric Sparkes on Friday of using the racially charged language during an altercation at a metro Atlanta Publix grocery store. She posted a Facebook Live video where she tearfully recounted a “white man” calling her a “lazy son of a b—h” and that she should “go back where she came from.”
“People are getting really out of control with this, with this white privilege,” Thomas said. “People need to see the hate that is going on in this country. The hate is real.”
However, a Publix employee told Cobb County police that she witnessed part of the conversation and it was Thomas who repeatedly told Sparkes to “go back where you came from.” The employee also said she did not hear Sparkes use those words with Thomas, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sparkes said he only votes for Democrats and is of Cuban descent. He said Thomas was using the incident to further her political career, and he is considering a defamation suit.
Thomas, who is pregnant and was shopping with her daughter, said she feared for her life during the incident, but police reviewed security video and said Sparkes “did not appear to be irate.” Sparkes admitted to confronting Thomas for checking out with too many items in a 10-items-or-less line and, after she responded sharply, calling her a “lazy little b—h”:
He wrote that Sparkes “did not appear to be irate” during the confrontation and that he quickly retreated from Thomas as she moved his way “pointing her finger at him.”
When she moved toward Sparkes a second time, a Publix staffer waved for him to leave and Thomas turned to her daughter and paid for her items, he wrote. The dispute lasted about 45 seconds.
The Publix employee, a customer service manager, told police that after Sparkes accosted Thomas he began to leave but “Ms. Thomas kept ‘running her mouth’ as she approached him.” Sparkes, she said, responded by repeatedly calling Thomas “ignorant.”
The employee told the officer that she did not hear either of them use profanity.
Another employee told the AJC he didn’t hear Sparkes use the “go back” terminology.
“I’m not going to say that wasn’t said, but I don’t remember hearing it,” he said. “I’m going to leave it at that.”
Thomas’s video drew intense media attention. It came after President Donald Trump drew criticism for tweeting that certain minority Democratic congresswomen should “go back” and fix the countries they came from—three of the presumed targets of the tweet were born in the United States.
However, Thomas backtracked 24 hours after the initial accusation, saying in a local TV interview, “I don’t want to say he said, ‘Go back to your country,’ or ‘Go back to where you came from.’ But he was making those types of references is what I remember.”
Thomas and Sparkes also sparred on Saturday in a bizarre parking lot confrontation in front of television cameras, where Sparkes repeatedly accused Thomas of lying about what he said. Thomas told him, “You are going to jail.”
Thomas accused him of seeking “five minutes of fame.” She tried to shake his hand at another point, and she declared herself “calm” and “OK.” Sparkes admitted to using vulgar language against her but flatly denied using the expression “go back.”
“I am very happy with myself for standing up for black and brown people all over the nation,” Thomas said.
Thomas drew support from Democrats around the country in the immediate aftermath of her Facebook video, and the state Democratic Party said in a statement, “We stand with you Erica Thomas. Trump’s racist rhetoric is emboldening hate across Georgia and our country.”
Skeptics drew parallels between Thomas and Jussie Smollett, who was arrested in February for perpetrating a fake hate crime against himself in Chicago and blaming it on Trump supporters. The surprising decision to drop the charges against him drew outrage from Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel (D.) and local police, and the matter is under review.
Some Georgia Republicans have called on to Thomas to resign if she made up the racist attack, but she stands by her story. Her attorney, Gerald Griggs, said the matter needs further investigation because the witness who said Thomas used the “go back” language didn’t hear the initial conversation.
