CNN Silent on Contributor’s False Viral Tweet

CNN has remained silent about a contributor’s viral tweet that misleadingly claimed to relay a conversation between Republican senators.

Former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart received more than 9,000 retweets and 36,000 likes for a tweet claiming to report an overheard conversation between two Fox News-watching GOP senators. “Is this stuff real? I haven’t heard any of this before. I thought it was all about a server,” the senators supposedly said. “If half the stuff Schiff is saying is true, we’re up shit’s creek. Hope the White House has exculpatory evidence.”

Replies to the tweet indicate that many people took Lockhart’s scoop seriously. When reached for comment about the episode, a CNN spokesman redirected the Washington Free Beacon to a network communications director for the network who ignored multiple requests for comment.

In follow-up tweets, Lockhart acknowledged that he “made up” the overheard conversation and called it satire. Lockhart did not delete the misleading tweet even as it went viral, and the clarifying tweets did not achieve the same reach as the original.

After he continued to receive criticism from conservative and liberal journalists alike, Lockhart characterized his detractors as “purveyors of Pizzagate and the Seth Rich conspiracy.”

CNN reporters on the media and “disinformation” beats have repeatedly said that satire is no excuse for spreading “fake news,” particularly if some internet users mistake it for genuine news. Some have accused comedy websites of hiding behind satire to mislead voters while dodging punishment from social media companies.

Brian Stelter, the network’s media critic and host of Reliable Sources, was also silent on the matter, although he did tweet about President Donald Trump’s “false claims.”

Lockhart, who has made frequent appearances during the network’s impeachment coverage, also sparked controversy on Tuesday when he said that Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) should face prison time for tweeting while he was on the Senate floor. The former public relations executive was seemingly unaware that most politicians have dedicated press staffers who handle their social media accounts, and that senators cannot be imprisoned for breaking Senate floor rules.

Cruz mocked the tweet with a graphic of a cell phone reading, “Come and Take It”—a mock-up of a popular flag commemorating the famous victory at the Battle of Gonzales that sparked the Texas Revolution.

Exclusive— Devin Nunes: CNN ‘in Defiance of Federal Judge’ Order to Respond to Defamation Lawsuit

CNN is in defiance of a federal judge’s order to respond to a defamation lawsuit filed by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) over a completely false story the network printed about the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) ranking member late last year.

The Root Attacks ‘White’ National Review Writer… Who’s Actually Black

A left-wing website attacked a “white” National Review Online writer for his perspective on black history, failing to realize the writer in question is black.

Peter Kirsanow, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and a former member of the National Labor Relations Board, argued in a piece published Thursday that the New York Times‘s 1619 Project has an “obsession” with slavery at the expense of the rest of American history. Michael Harriot, a senior reporter for the liberal African-American publication The Root, responded in a piece titled, “Black History, According to White People.” Harriot referred to Kirsanow as white throughout the post.

“As white people are wont to do, Kirsanow framed his argument in the context of Martin Luther King Jr.,” Harriot wrote. “White people love to quote King because he is a mythical figure who has been whitewashed by the very version of America that Kirsanow wants to perpetuate … ‘The 1619 Project’s obsession with race, standing alone, is bad enough,’ Kirsanow writes, whitely.”

Kirsanow was surprised to discover that he is caucasian.

“Well, I guess if Elizabeth Warren can be Cherokee, I can be white,” Kirsanow told the Washington Free Beacon. “Wait till my wife finds out.”

Harriot did not respond to a request for comment.

National Review Online editor Charles Cooke mocked the error on Twitter Friday, tweeting, “Today I learned that Peter Kirsanow is white.”

Nolte: Bernie Sanders Supporters Just Got a Taste of CNN’s Shameless Lying

What’s more, this is the second time CNN rigged a debate against Bernie. Never forget that a CNN staffer rigged a 2016 CNN debate between Hillary Clinton and Bernie by slipping Hillary the debate questions in advance.

AP Blames U.S. For Iran Shooting Down Commercial Jet

An engine lies on the ground after a Ukrainian plane carrying 176 passengers crashed near Imam Khomeini airport in the Iranian capital Tehran early in the morning on January 8, 2020

The headline of an Associated Press article blamed the United States for the crash of a civilian airplane Iran shot down.

“An Iranian general dies in U.S. attack, and innocents suffer,” read the original headline of the Associated Press story published on Thursday. The innocents in question were passengers of a Ukrainian International Airlines jet shot down by what Western leaders say was an Iranian missile.

The piece reported that the recent U.S.-Iran conflict “had begun with a drone attack on Gen. Qassem Soleimani’s motorcade” and “rippled outward until dozens of Iranian-Canadians … were dead.” The story failed to mention any escalation from the Iranian regime that led to the drone attack, including one attack on America’s embassy in Iraq and another that led to the death of a U.S. contractor.

The piece quotes Canadian civilians who fault Trump for the Iranian missile strike. “This is insane. Sickening. Imagine having a family member on that plane,” one Torontonian told the AP. “One man, and only one, is responsible for those deaths. And he will never face consequences for them.”

After publication, the headline was changed Friday to “As Iran and U.S. take step back from the brink, Canada grieves.” The wire service did not attach a correction to the change. Even after amending the headline, the article still says “the killing of an Iranian general last week in a U.S. drone stroke may have led to the deaths of dozens of their citizens in a plane crash.”

The Associated Press is not alone in blaming Trump for Iran’s missile strike. Several Democrats have also blamed Trump for the deadly attack. “If what is being projected is true, this is yet another example of collateral damage from the actions that have been taken in a provocative way by the president of the United States,” Rep. Jackie Speier (D., Calif.) said on CNN Thursday.

“Innocent civilians are now dead because they were caught in the middle of an unnecessary and unwanted military tit for tat,” tweeted Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

WaPo Reveals Photoshop Is Problematic If It Targets Dems

A Thursday Washington Post story attacked Rep. Elise Stefanik (R., N.Y.) for “manipulating” an image of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), even though such modifications are standard in political advertising on both sides of the aisle, including from Pelosi herself.

“Rep. Stefanik tweets altered photo of Pelosi in GOP fundraising appeal,” read the headline of a Post piece. Reporter Felicia Sonmez wrote that the photo “appears to have been manipulated” and shows “a close-up, red-tinted photo of Pelosi, with the lines in the House speaker’s face exaggerated due to the image’s unnaturally high contrast.”

The use of filters and contrast on an opponent’s picture is a common tactic in political advertising. “It’s widespread, especially in video,” one GOP operative told the Washington Free Beacon. The Washington Post‘s criticism of Stefanik’s use of photoshop struck the operative as politically convenient. Stefanik’s 2020 Democratic opponent Tedra Cobb, for example, has frequently tweeted images of the congresswoman that have been similarly “manipulated” using black-and-white and fuzzy filters without attracting negative attention from Capitol Hill reporters.

Pelosi herself often has tweeted similarly “manipulated” photos of President Donald Trump and other ideological foes without attracting the notice of the Washington Post.

“This story is the latest evidence that President Trump’s presidency has caused folks at the Washington Post to lose their damn minds,” wrote NRCC national press secretary Michael McAdams in an email.

Stefanik responded on social media by sharing a tweet saying the Washington Post engaged in the same sort of photo “manipulation” the paper had condemned. “Thank you again to @washingtonpost – we’ve had a huge morning of online national fundraising to Pressure Pelosi landing page because of this article!” she wrote.

Sonmez did not respond to a request for comment.

CNN Agrees To Pay Out Settlement to Covington Catholic Student Nick Sandmann

CNN settled out of court this week in a longstanding lawsuit from Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann. According to WXIX-TV, the size of the settlement was not publicly disclosed at the hearing Tuesday in Kentucky’s federal courthouse in Covington. Sandmann had sued CNN, and similar left-wing establishment news outlets The Washington Post and…

CNN Settles Lawsuit From Free Beacon Man of the Year Nick Sandmann

Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann scored a legal victory against fake news after CNN agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging that the network falsely tarred the teenager as racist.

The settlement was announced at a Tuesday hearing at the federal courthouse in Covington, Ky., according to Cincinnati FOX affiliate FOX19. A source at CNN confirmed the settlement to the Washington Free Beacon but said that details have yet to be finalized.

“The case is settled,” Sandmann attorney Todd McMurtry also confirmed in an email. “We have no comment.”

Sandmann’s lawsuit charged that CNN’s coverage of a January 2019 confrontation between the student and Native American activist Nathan Phillips was false and one-sided, based only on interviews with Phillips and a selectively edited Twitter video. The full one-hour video taken at the March for Life contradicted Phillips’s claims that Sandmann and his fellow students approached him, “blocked” and “surrounded” him, and chanted “build the wall.”

Sandmann, a Washington Free Beacon Man of the Year, filed the lawsuit in March 2019, arguing that CNN defamed him as part of a larger campaign against supporters of President Donald Trump. Attorneys for the 16-year-old Kentucky native sought $75 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages “to punish and to deter CNN from ever again engaging in false, reckless, malicious, and agenda-driven attacks on children.”

Lawsuits against the Washington Post and NBCUniversal remain pending. Sandmann attorney Lin Wood told FOX19 that they also plan to file lawsuits against Phillips and Gannett, the publisher of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
