Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is planning to hire a private investigator as he cancels an upcoming public appearance and hunkers down behind closed doors in defiance of Democratic leaders calling for his resignation.

His move, reported by the New York Times, comes as Northam hasn’t been seen in public since Saturday and weighs his political fate in the wake after the revelation of a racist photo in his medical school yearbook.

The article goes on to state the following:

As he debates his next move, Northam will not make a scheduled public appearance at the College of William & Mary’s Charter Day celebration on Friday, a prestigious event on the state’s political calendar.

‘Under the circumstances, it has become clear that the Governor’s presence would fundamentally disrupt the sense of campus unity we aspire to and hope for with this event. We have conferred with the governor’s office, and he will not be part of Friday’s program,’ College President Katherine Rowe said in a statement.
