Last Friday, President Trump backed off his threat to impose graduating tariffs on all Mexican imports, after the U.S. reached a “deal” with Mexico to help deal with the flood of illegal immigrants pouring across the border into the United States.
Instead, Mexico pledged to deploy up to 6,000 of its National Guard troops to their southern border, to help prevent illegal border crossings while partnering with the U.S. to house and care for asylum seekers.
Mexico said on Wednesday that deployment of their troops would begin today, and the deployment would “progress rapidly.”
Reportedly, an assessment will be made in 45 days to see if the plan is working effectively. If not, the Trump administration would ask again for a “safe third country” agreement, in which Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States would be held in Mexico while their claims are processed.
Border Patrol has announced that over 144,000 illegal aliens were apprehended crossing the border during the month of May alone – up from 109,000 in April.
