Jussie Smollett ‘Did Not Want To Report’ Apparent Hate Crime Initially, Reports Say

Although Jussie Smollett was the victim of an awful attack on his life, the Empire star almost decided not to come forward with his story.

This new information comes exactly one week since the apparent hate crime happened, per reports from ABC7 in Chicago.

According to the police incident report, the 35-year-old “did not want to report offense however he believed it to be in the best interest to,” the friend who called police said. The doc continues, detailing the physical and verbal attack where two men allegedly yelled racial and homophobic slurs at Jussie, just after getting his attention by mentioning Empire.

It was also reported that there was a noose found around the actor’s neck (still on him by the time he made contact with police), and he was covered in an unknown substance, which many say was bleach.

Ugh. We’re still so shocked and disgusted by the attack itself, and can see how it would almost be too traumatizing to talk about.

And considering the mixed support the black LGBTQ community has received in the past, it’s not impossible to think Smollett would have second thoughts about people believing him.

Either way, we’re glad the 35-year-old decided to go to the authorities because his story deserves to be told and not to mention, the assailants are still at large.

Thankfully, the police are getting closer to identifying at least one of the attackers. As we reported, Chicago PD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi revealed that investigators have acquired surveillance footage of two men in the area of the alleged assault that could lead to the arrests of the Empire actor’s attackers.

We truly hope the men responsible are caught, and that Jussie continues to stay strong.
