  • What happened? Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is the latest figure in the Trump administration to get the axe.

  • Catch me up: Fired on the eve of his retirement, McCabe has been accused in an internal report of lying under oath about a meeting between FBI officials and a journalist that he authorized.

  • What are people saying? Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who rejected McCabe’s appeal to not be fired, said the former deputy director violated his FBI oath on multiple occasions. “The F.B.I. expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity and accountability,” Sessions said in a statement. “I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately.”

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) pointed out that FBI agents urged that McCabe be fired. “Make no mistake. The FBI is who recommended that he be fired,” Gowdy said. “It wasn’t crazy House Republicans and it wasn’t the Trump administration. It was his own fellow bureau agents.”

  • Jonathan Turley, a left-leaning George Washington University law professor, told CNN on Saturday that McCabe should be worried about jail time. He pointed out that it is rare for FBI officials to make this kind of recommendation, and it should be taken seriously. “They clearly concluded that McCabe misled them, and that he misled them on one of the core issues they were investigating, not a collateral issue,” Turley said. [btnsx id=”5955″]
