Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D., Ill.) thanked her son Wednesday for convincing her in June to support impeachment—well before before President Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky took place.
“It is my adult son, Ian Schakowsky, whom I will always credit for my decision last June to support an impeachment inquiry,” Schakowsky said. “It had never been my goal to impeach a president, but Ian made such a compelling case.”

“He said, ‘Mom, this is not about politics. This is not about party,'” she continued. “And pushing back against my arguments he said, ‘This has nothing to do with the final outcome. It’s about doing the right thing, even if others don’t.’ He made me see that it was about my legacy, my modest place in history.”
“I want to thank you, my son, for helping me do the right thing today,” she added.
Schakowsky made the comments during an appearance on the House floor as lawmakers debated the articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Trump’s phone call with Zelensky occurred on July 25. Democrats allege Trump used the call to pressure Zelensky into launching an investigation of Joe Biden’s son Hunter. Whether Trump withheld lethal aid to influence Zelensky remains a central point of contention in the impeachment inquiry.
Trump denies he withheld the aid in exchange for an investigation. He and Republicans have been quick to point out that the aid was eventually given to the Ukrainians without an investigation into Hunter Biden being announced.
