They’re alive, dammit!
A Netherlands community is shocked after local authorities found six adult siblings and a middle-aged man living in a hidden farmhouse basement for almost a decade as they waited for “the end of time.”
According to RTV Drenthe, the family was found on Sunday evening after the eldest of the siblings, who are ages 18-25, escaped the basement and exposed the situation to a local bar owner — after ordering five beers, of course.
The outlet said the siblings were preparing for the end of the world with the 58-year-old man and had no contact with the outside world. They had lived off their vegetable garden and farm animals, and reportedly had no idea other people were living in the world. Wow.
The 25-year-old, who escaped the property and found his way to a pub in the nearby village of Ruinerwold, started talking to bar owner Chris Westerbeek, telling him about the dire situation.
Westerbeek told BBC News:
“I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help… then we called the police. He had long hair, a dirty beard, wore old clothes and looked confused. He said he’d never been to school and hadn’t been to the barber for nine years… He said he had brothers and sisters who lived at the farm. He said he was the oldest and wanted to end the way they were living.”
Local authorities and Mayor Roger de Groot were immediately looped in. Police then searched the secluded farm and discovered a hidden staircase behind the living room’s cupboard leading to the basement, where the siblings had been residing.
Officials also found the 58-year-old man, who appeared to have suffered a stroke years ago, in bed. While some outlets have reported the man was the father of the adults, Mayor de Groot said in a presser that he was not related to the siblings, nor was he the owner of the farmhouse.
According to the Algemeen Dagblad paper, the property was being rented out by owners Klaas and Alida Rooze, who claimed they were not privy to the people under the stairs’ existence.
They told the outlet:
“We knew absolutely nothing of this. We had rented the house for years to an individual and now we learn that a man was living there with children. We have no idea who this can be.”
The 58-year-old was arrested by authorities after allegedly refusing to cooperate with the investigation. Neighbors apparently thought the man lived there alone. The siblings were not registered anywhere.
Police have started to investigate the property while they work to determine why the group had been living underground for so long if they were held against their will, and if any criminal charges should be pressed against the older man. Police spokesperson Nathalie Schubart told The Guardian:
“Part of our investigation is to find out what the people in that house were doing exactly. There are still many questions to which we have no answers. The investigation is still going on.”
Mayor de Groot added in the press conference that officials believe the siblings’ mother died years ago before they moved into the property, adding the sisters and brothers were now in “a safe place.”
There appears to be no other information at this time, but the police investigation is still in full swing. Ch-ch-check out the property in the video (below).
